Does Your Car Seat Feel like Rocks on Your Bottom? Pressure points may be a problem!

Malibu’s Top Seats Came From Studying Lots of Bottoms. Engineers analyze more than 4,600 pressure points to ensure maximum seat comfort.

Chevrolet Malibu seat performance engineers Daniel Cohen and Cheryl Hajciar know more about keeping hindquarters happy than a good masseuse.

Cohen and Hajciar are tasked with ensuring that customers of all shapes and sizes get maximum comfort when sitting in the all-new 2013 Chevrolet Malibu. They use high-tech tools and real-world ride evaluations to deliver the best-possible seat comfort for Malibu customers around the world.

The 2013 Malibu seats were designed with input from engineers and designers around the world. The European team designed the seat and engineers from North America and Asia enhanced them to match consumer comfort requirements in their respective regions.

Cohen works in the lab at General Motors’ seat comfort testing facility in Milford, Mich. He used state-of-the-art digital pressure-mapping technology to scan the rear-end impressions of people of all shapes and sizes.

The system takes a snapshot of a person’s back and rear-end pressure distribution over the seat surface, creating a map with more than 4,600 data points. The information is transferred to a laptop computer that generates graphics illustrating how occupants sit in the seat statically or while driving.

Complementing seat-pressure mapping, Cohen also uses a rear-end test machine that simulates the effects of seat force and deflection through various sized buttock-shaped plates. They are made of aluminum and can weigh up to 250 pounds.

“This test allows us to understand how far a customer will compress into the seat to ensure the selected seat foam and other materials can support the pressure,” said Cohen. “We want to find the sweet spot of seat comfort: a seat that is neither too firm nor too soft, but just right.”

While Cohen’s job is in a laboratory, Hajciar works on the road. She coordinatesMalibu seat ride evaluations with several volunteers, spending hundreds of hours logging thousands of miles to ensure she gets sufficient feedback on seat prototypes.
“Our seat evaluators often ride long distances to achieve our mission of creating the most-comfortable seat possible,” said Hajciar. “We are being meticulous about the details so that when customers get behind the wheel of a 2013 Malibu, they’ll immediately feel the difference.”

Chevrolet confirmed today it will add a diesel variant to the Cruze lineup in North America in calendar year 2013

Diesel versions of the Cruze are currently being sold in Europe. Additional details on the Cruze diesel for North American markets will be released at a later date.

The diesel will bolster the already fuel-efficient Cruze lineup. Cruze Eco with a standard six-speed manual transmission, is the most fuel-efficient gas-powered/non-hybrid vehicle in America, with an EPA-rated 42 mpg on the highway.

Cruze recorded a total of 24,896 sales in the United States in June, the fifth consecutive month sales have exceeded 20,000. The success of the Cruze has increased Chevrolet’s total share of the compact-car segment from 9.5 percent a year ago to 11.9 percent for the first five months of 2011, even as the segment size grew 19 percent.

Chevrolet Volt Problems Foreseen?

What to do with electric batterys at the end of their life? Problem is being worked, while folks eagerly await the release of the Chevrolet Volt at Hendrick Chevrolet Cadillac in Monroe!

Hendrick Chevrolet Cadillac is excited to announce the debut of the new 2011 Chevy Volt at its Monroe dealership around September 2011.

Hendrick Chevrolet Cadillac in Monroe has one of largest selections of new and pre-owned Chevrolet vehicles in North Carolina and looks forward to adding the Volt to its inventory later this year. View Hendrick Chevrolet Cadillac's inventory and Volt information at http://www.hendrickchevy.com
The 2011 Chevrolet Volt, a revolutionary four-door, four-seat hybrid vehicle, is powered by a lithium-ion battery and a flex-fuel powered four-cylinder generator. The Green Chevrolet Volt optimizes the way it drives depending on variables such as weather, the electrical features in use and consumer driving style. The Volt can travel up to 40 miles on a full charge — completely free of gas and emissions, yet has the merits of instant torque and horsepower from the electric motors. Step on the gas and feel Camaro-like torque while emitting no emissions. For more information visit http://www.hendrickchevy.com

With the exciting launch of the Chevrolet Volt, Electric and electrified vehicles are all the current rage among automakers. With more electric vehicles being purchased, researchers are hard at work figuring out what to do with all those electric batteries once their automotive life reaches the end of the line.
According to General Motors and power productivity ace, ABB Group, Chevrolet Volt battery systems will still have a lot of juice – up to 70 percent – after they have reached the end of their vehicle life. In fact, GM predicts 33 used Volt batteries will have the ability to provide enough power to 50 households for several hours during a power outage.
GM and ABB together have come up with an energy storage system, consisting of a grid-tied power inverter that could be used to charge and discharge the Volt battery pack. The grid would store electricity and come on-line during outages or in times of peak demand, ultimately saving customers and utilities money. The prototype is built for 25-kilowatt/50-kWh applications, which equals the average energy use of about five homes.
While GM and ABB continue developing the prototype, Pablo Valenica, senior manager for Battery Lifecycle Management, will oversee his team while they work on battery systems capable of use beyond their automotive life in all future GM cars.
