Chevrolet Announces New SS Performance Sedan

Will compete in 2013 NASCAR and arrive in showrooms as 2014 model

DETROIT – Chevrolet today announced the return of a V-8 powered, rear-wheel-drive performance sedan to the U.S. lineup, the Chevrolet SS.  The SS will also be Chevrolet’s next NASCAR Sprint Cup racecar and will debut in its race configuration at the 2013 Daytona 500.

The limited production version of the Chevrolet SS will be a 2014 model and will arrive in dealer showrooms in late 2013. It is the first time in 17 years that  Chevrolet will offer a rear-wheel-drive sedan for sale in the United States.

Chevrolet has a long history of using the SS (Super Sport) designation on high-performance models of some of its most enduring nameplates. The SS designation first appeared in 1957 on a Corvette prototype race car built under the guidance of Zora Arkus-Duntov with the plan to enter it in the Le Mans 24-hour race.

The first production vehicle offered with an SS option was the 1961 Impala – 453 were built with the performance upgrades which included a modified chassis and suspension, power brakes, a steering column mounted tachometer and unique wheels and tires. The latest SS model in the Chevrolet lineup is the fifth-generation Camaro, which debuted in 2010.

The Chevrolet SS will be a derivative of the award-winning global rear-wheel-drive architecture that spawns performance vehicles like Chevrolet Camaro and Holden’s upcoming VF Commodore.  The much anticipated Australian-built car will benefit from significant technology advances which enhance overall performance.

“As a passionate race fan and performance enthusiast, I am thrilled that Chevrolet will deliver a true rear-wheel-drive NASCAR racecar in the SS that is closely linked to the performance sedan that will be available for sale,” said Mark Reuss, president of GM North America.  “The Chevrolet SS is a great example of how GM is able to leverage its global product portfolio to deliver a unique performance experience that extends beyond the track. I am personally looking forward to driving it.”

Chevrolet was America’s best-selling performance car brand in 2011 with Camaro and Corvette accounting for one out of every three sports cars sold in the United States.  The addition of the SS should strengthen Chevrolet’s position as a leading performance brand.

Packing It In: SRX Designed for Summer Road Trips

Cargo Management System offers unique packing solution

DETROIT – The summer road trip season is near, meaning millions of drivers are planning getaways – with lots of stuff. The Cadillac SRX crossover’s unique Cargo Management System is designed as an ideal companion for long weekends and driving vacations.

“We put a lot of thought into what kinds of items Cadillac customers would want to bring into the SRX and where they’d want to put them,” said Elizabeth Pilibosian, SRX chief engineer. “The philosophy was not just to maximize total space but to have a place for everything and everything in its place. That makes a huge difference on longer trips.”    

The rear compartment Cargo Management System uses a segment-exclusive U-Rail track system with an adjustable cargo fence that segments the area to contain items of various sizes and restrict their movement when the vehicle is in motion. The fence is sturdy, but also easy to move around the U-shaped track to adjust to a variety of positions to suit a range of items and packing arrangements.

The cargo fence can be removed, retracted and conveniently secured beneath the load floor when not in use. An optional cargo net, organizer or area divider may be used in place of the tubular fence. Four steel loops positioned in each corner of the compartment provide convenient connection points for nets or bungee cords that a driver might bring into the vehicle.

The rear compartment’s load floor has a latch that reveals a waterproof bin, measuring 26 by 12 inches by eight inches deep. This easy-to-clean bin is ideal for storing damp or dirty items from a beach trip, or it can be used as a cooler, or to house smaller items under the floor and out of view. A smaller secondary bin holds the vehicle’s tire inflator kit that can be used as a pump for bike tires and beach toys depending on valve compatibility.

Flanking the main bin are two smaller discreetly covered compartments designed to be ideal for stowing small tools, such as a tire pressure gauge. Regular use maintains proper tire pressure, which can help maximize fuel economy.

A two-position cargo shade can be used to conceal the rear compartment when the hatch is closed.

In SRX’s passenger area are several additional storage areas. Each door has upper and lower bins, as does the glove compartment, which can cool fruit and beverages when the air conditioning is on. The center console offers an upper level for small items like an MP3 player or mobile phone, and a lower level for larger items.

The cup holders between the front seats are dual-level as well, with a retractable floor that lets the user go from a small coffee to a “grande” at the flip of a switch The false floor also creates a secret compartment that can hide a wallet or wristwatch.

In front of the cup holders is the SRX’s smallest bin, designed expressly to house mobile phones and sometimes known as the “phone throne.”

Open SRX’s rear programmable liftgate and more than 29 cubic feet of storage space behind the second row seating awaits, more than enough room for four rolling suitcases, sports equipment and sundries. With the 60/40 split rear seats folded flat, the cargo area grows to more than 61 cubic feet to accommodate items like a bike or baby stroller.

Can GM Comply with the EPA manufacturing rules?

Sites average 25 percent reduction in energy intensity. GM’s 30 plants represent nearly a third of all sites that have achieved the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry.




DETROIT – General Motors has cut energy intensity at 30 North American plants by an average of 25 percent – equivalent to  the emissions from powering 97,000 U.S. homes – to meet the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s Energy Star© Challenge for Industry.

Collectively, the manufacturing facilities avoided more than 778,380 metric tons of greenhouse gas. It would require the planting of 20 million trees that grow for 10 years to mitigate the same amount. 
And the efforts saved GM $50 million in energy costs.

EPA’s program challenges manufacturing companies to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by improving their energy efficiency by 10 percent within five years. The GM plants agreed to establish an energy intensity baseline normalized by production volume. They set a 10-percent improvement goal, implemented energy efficiency projects, tracked energy use and verified savings.

"EPA congratulates GM for achieving these important energy efficiency improvements," said Jean Lupinacci, chief of the ENERGY STAR Commercial and Industrial Program. "Energy efficiency can deliver significant financial and environmental benefits, and we look forward to GM's continued leadership and partnership with ENERGY STAR."

To achieve the challenge, GM employed tactics such as benchmarking energy use through energy management systems; automating shut-down of equipment; and upgrading to energy-efficient lighting and more-efficient heating and cooling systems.

The achievements follow the Lansing (Mich.) Delta Township plant receiving EPA Energy Star Certification for performing in the top 25th percentile of similar facilities nationwide.  Worldwide, GM is committed to reducing emissions and petroleum dependence by being more energy efficient.

“GM employees at all levels help us reduce energy use and be more efficient throughout our operations,” said Mike Robinson, GM vice president of Sustainability and Global Regulatory Affairs. “With this also comes a strong business case – these improvements saved us $50 million, which helps make the company more competitive.”

GM’s 30 plants represent nearly a third of all sites that have achieved the ENERGY STAR Challenge for Industry. According to the EPA, 86 of the 386 manufacturing sites that have taken the challenge have met the goal to date, improving their energy efficiency by 10 percent or more.

We had some great news via an announcement by Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS). Recently, CMS made the decision based on budget cuts to eliminate the majority of middle school athletic programs. Many community leaders, educators, students and parents were very concerned about how the youth in Charlotte would be negatively impacted if middle school sports were eliminated. True, some kids in more affluent areas could make up for the lack of school athletics in rec leagues, however kids in low-income families can't always afford it, or have one or both parents working, and simply don't have time. Well that has all changed, and a big thanks is owed to Charlotte businessman and NASCAR team owner Rick Hendrick. A $250,000 donation directly to the middle school athletic programs has come from Hendrick Automotive.

Teenagers and parents in the Charlotte-Mecklenburg area received great news today thanks to Mr. Hendrick. Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools (CMS) announced a $250,000 sponsorship from Hendrick Automotive Group and Hendrickcars.com to support middle school sports. Due to budget shortfalls, CMS drastically cut the middle school sports program. The contribution, along with a gift from an unidentified source, provides enough funding for the school system to provide a full slate of 13 sports at the district’s 32 middle schools for the upcoming school year.

Reduce Noise? Chevrolet Malibu Engineers are All Ears

Sound experts use advanced technologies to make 2013 Malibu cabin quiet.



A room full of audiophiles may not agree on a single style of music, but most concur that ordinary MP3 player ear buds don’t have the technology to deliver concert-quality sound. Likewise, Chevrolet noise engineers threw out conventional tools to evaluate the interior sound quality of the all-new 2013 Malibu sedan.

In the intensely competitive midsize car segment, customers expect refined, quiet interiors. The challenge for engineers is that sound – like music – is very subjective, and people respond to it differently. “To tune the sound properties to appeal to the widest possible audience, we need to make sure everyone hears the same thing,” said Kara Gordon, Malibu’s lead acoustic engineer.

Gordon and her fellow engineers are using better sound reproduction in the lab to help make the 2013 Malibu sedan one of the most refined and quiet midsize sedans available when it launches early next year.

They are doing this by equipping pre-production Malibus with a mannequin-like recording device called an Aachen HEAD. Named for the headquarters of Head Acoustics GmbH in Aachen, Germany, the head is a digital recording tool that closely matches the way humans process sound with both their ears. The Aachen HEAD technology preserves the binaural attributes of the sound, regardless of whether it’s inside or outside of a moving vehicle.

The device mimics the head of an average-sized person and incorporates specially calibrated, highly accurate digital microphones in each ear position. The microphones use a precise, 24-bit recording resolution to enable dynamic range equal with human hearing.

The Aachen HEAD is typically belted into the passenger seat or rear seat farthest from the driver. The recordings are made as the test Malibus are driven on a variety of road surfaces at a range of speeds.

At General Motors’ “Jury Room” in Milford, Mich., groups of engineers listen to the Malibu’s interior noise recordings and rate them on several criteria.

The Jury Room is equipped with a high-fidelity audio playback system that features Stax SR-303 electrostatic ear speakers. Unlike those little white buds, the large, rectangular Stax units fit over the ear and feature a large, translucent electrostatic film for precise sound reproduction.

The stock ear buds that come with a digital music player can reproduce sounds from a low end of 20 Hz to a maximum of 20,000 Hz, but all audio devices experience distortion as they approach the limits of their range.

In contrast, the Stax ear speakers’ range goes from just 7 Hz all the way up to 41,000 Hz, well beyond the range of the human ear. However, that extra head room means the speakers are always closer to their sweet spot for the sounds we can hear. That means everyone evaluating the sounds of a Malibu or any other Chevrolet hears the same sounds, regardless of which set of ear speakers is used, giving the engineers more consistent feedback on sound quality.

“The typical acoustic memory of the human ear to discern subtle yet important differences is about 10 seconds – or about the time it takes to go from one vehicle to another. The Aachen HEAD, our Jury Room and high-tech headphones make it possible for us to give our Malibu customers the quietest, most pleasing interior sound quality possible,” said Gordon.

The new Malibu will feature components that prevent tire, wind and road noise from entering the cabin.  Several components such as noise-reducing outside rear view mirrors, laminated side glass and noise-absorption pads are strategically placed to make the cabin quiet and improve the overall quality inside.

The new Chevrolet Malibu will be sold in nearly 100 countries on six continents. It will be available in LS, LT, ECO and LTZ models in North America. Malibu production in the United States is scheduled to begin in early 2012 with the ECO model. Malibu will be built in multiple locations around the globe, including the Fairfax, Kan. and Detroit-Hamtramck assembly plants in the United States. Pricing will be announced later this year.

GM Manual Transmission Problems

GM works to prevent problems with manual transmissions and prevent expensive recalls.

PONTIAC, Mich. – Woodward Avenue became the first concrete highway in the world in 1909. Three years later, the first electric traffic light was installed on the road that runs from downtown Detroit to downtown Pontiac.

A lesser known historical fact is that Woodward Avenue driving styles have helped improve transmission durability by inspiring a test procedure based on the rigors of strip driving.

GM sent engineers to Woodward Avenue as early as 1967 to simulate some of the tortures placed on manual transmissions and “street” testing has become the norm. The test procedure combines elements of the worst-case shifting style of some manual transmission customers, including repeated high-torque launches and high-rev shifts.

“We’ve been evolving the Woodward test to make sure our transmissions live through repeated performance-style shifting,” said Brad Bur, GM assistant chief engineer for manual transmissions. “Of course we encourage safe driving, but we know burnouts and quick shifting are the reality. We have to design and engineer our transmissions to succeed in every possible scenario, including the street.”

Transmission components like clutches and gears have been dramatically improved over the years through tests like the Woodward test, which is responsible for a nearly 600-percent increase in flawless transmission shift cycles.

“This is one of the ways we are able to offer one of the best powertrain warranties in the business,” said Bur. “We use this test on all our performance manual transmissions like those found in the Chevrolet Corvette and Camaro.”

Woodward Avenue is home of the Dream Cruise, a vintage car cruise that dates to the cruising heydays of the 1950s and 1960s. It takes place along Woodward Avenue in Detroit and its northern suburbs. The Dream Cruise routinely gathers more than 1.5 million participants and spectators to celebrate the automotive heritage of the Motor City.

The 2012 Chevrolet Cruze will go on sale later this year.
